“You’ll lose your friends because they’re afraid of getting in trouble!” … “You won’t have any more time!” … “It’ll be too hard.”
All of these are things you’ve probably heard when telling people about becoming an RA, but they’re all common misconceptions about a job that has the potential to change your life. One of the greatest reasons I decided to become an RA is because of the inspiration I had received from my own freshman RA and I made it my goal to impact at least one of my residents in that way. Time management between your job as an RA and other things in your life will be something that you’ll need to get used to but it’s definitely doable. What they don’t tell you about becoming an RA is how much you will grow as a person in terms of your professional and personal experiences on and off duty. You will meet people that will most likely attend your wedding later on and you will gain experiences so unique that no other job will be able to offer you. At some points, you’ll be forgetting it’s a job just because of how normal it feels to be surrounded by your friends and helping others. Not a day goes by that I regret becoming an RA and I am continuously grateful for all of the skills, experiences and lifelong friends that I have gained.
