People talk about learning things like responsibility, time management, patience, and discipline from being a Resident Assistant. All those things are true, and I definitely can't forget about the connections and life-long friendships I've made through my staffs these past four years I've been hired. But what stands out to me most as a Resident Assistant is how much I've learned to care about others and listen when people need someone. It's easy to pass by someone sitting alone with their head down and assuming that they're tired, or brush things off when your roommate starts spending more time sleeping than hanging out with their friends. I learned the most when residents would come into my office hours saying "I just need someone to vent to" or when I would ask the person sitting alone on a bench outside "Is everything okay?" We never know what struggles everyone else is going through, but as a Resident Assistant I've learned that it never hurts to ask.
“What started out as an astrology program called “Camping with the Stars” turned into a night of self expression! Atlantic City RAs Kim Secor and Laura Eguia planned for the program to consist of star gazing and discussion of astrology signs over DIY trivets. However, residents picked up their own ideas after realizing that astrological signs weren’t the only option they had to glue onto their projects. Residents striked up conversations on what they were designing and how they were designing their personally designed trivets. The program lasted much longer than anticipated and there wasn’t a single unused trivet left.”
